Top 5 Science Themes for Early Years Learners

Science can feel like labs and test tubes — but for little ones, science is simply curiosity in action. Every time a child asks “why?” or “what happens if…?”, they’re doing science. That’s not wishful thinking: the National Science Teachers Association, in a position statement endorsed by NAEYC, confirms that young children are genuinely capable of scientific reasoning and inquiry when they’re given varied chances to explore. These five science themes for early years are easy to explore, rooted in the everyday world, and full of chances to build skills and spark joy.

1. Space

The stars, the moon, and those mysterious planets — space is pure magic to young children, and it inspires big questions: “Where does the sun go at night?” You don’t need a telescope to begin. Watch the night sky, read space-themed books, or build model rockets from recycled materials.

2. Climate

This theme helps children understand the world and their place in it. Talking about weather, seasons, and caring for the planet sets the stage for early environmental awareness. Go on nature walks, sort the recycling, or watch the trees change with the seasons.

3. Flight

Birds, planes, kites — flight is exciting and full of movement, and a brilliant way to explore air and cause and effect. Make paper aeroplanes, watch the birds, or run with a scarf streaming behind you to feel the air lift it.

4. The human body

Children love learning about themselves — naming body parts, discovering the five senses, listening to a heartbeat, spotting X-rays in a book, or talking about healthy food and hygiene.

5. Robots

Robots are a wonderful way into simple engineering and problem-solving. Build “junk bots” from cardboard boxes, play a floor-arrow coding game, or watch clips of real robots and talk about the jobs they do.

You don’t need to be a science expert to raise a curious child. Join in their wonder, ask questions, and explore together — and you’ll find you’re learning too.
